Patricia Ann Reid
What education have you taken?
I am currently in my third year of my BA degree with a double major in Philosophy and Psychology. Most of the education I have taken so far has been in those two fields, but I have taken a couple of courses in Sociology and Anthropology as well. Prior to attending BU, I also took a couple of courses in basic accounting.
What accomplishments are you proud of?
Since coming to university I have received multiple scholarships that I am so honored to have been chosen for.
Tell me about yourself.
I am a single mother of two amazing children, ages 10 and 13. I am originally from Oak Lake, but moved to Brandon about eight years ago for work. After working in the city for a few years I decided that it was time for me to go back to school. I have always been a big proponent of the value of education, so I figured I better practice what I preach! It hasn’t always been easy juggling school, work, and children, but I would do it all over again in an instant. This has been such an eye-opening experience and I have met so many wonderful people along the way.
How did you become interested in your field of study?
The first class I ever attended at BU was Intro to Philosophy. I left class that day absolutely enthralled by everything I had just seen and heard. From that very first day I knew that I wanted to study Philosophy.
What is your philosophy in life?
My philosophy in life is practice kindness every day. Like Plato said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”
Where do you see yourself in the future?
In the future I see myself attending law school, most likely in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Nominator’s Comments
Patricia was my student last semester, in all three Philosophy courses I was teaching. She attended nearly every lecture, and achieved good marks in all three courses. I believe she was taking a four courses per term She was also working as Marking Assistant for the Introductory Logic course, which was taught by May Yoh, and May tells me that Patricia was a very good marking assistant. She will also be my marking assistant this term, for the same course. On top of that, I believe she also has been holding down a job off-campus, and she has a family to take care of, including two children, for whom she cooks three meals per day. All of that together is pretty amazing, and deserves to be recognized!
