Chelsey Hiebert

What education have you taken?

I am currently completing the final year of my Bachelor of Music degree in oboe performance.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud to have been a member of the Brandon University Women’s basketball team for 4 years, during which I was named an academic all Canadian in 2009 and 2011. I have also been the president of the Brandon University Music Students association for the past two years.

Tell me about yourself / your background / your history.

I grew up in Winnipeg, MB, where I attended high school at Vincent Massey Collegiate.

How did you become interested in your field of study?

My Mom is a musician as well as my Grandma and an aunt. The profession runs in the family and as a result, I was surrounded by music throughout my childhood. I started playing the oboe in Grade 6 band but I never intended to carry on my musical studies through university. It just ended up happening that way.

What is your philosophy in life?

No matter how good or bad a situation may be I try to make the best of it and learn something from it at the same time. As much as it may seem like common knowledge I also try to be nice to people; you never know who you will need help from in the future.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I hope to see myself doing something that I love. As of right now, I hope that would include playing the oboe.

Chelsey Hiebert is currently completing the final year of her Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance at Brandon University. She was a member of the Women’s Basketball team for four years and was named an Academic All Canadian after the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 seasons. Chelsey has been awarded various scholarships throughout her years of study at Brandon University and performs regularly with the Brandon University Orchestra, Symphonic Band, New Music Ensemble and Clarinet Choir. Outside of ensembles, she is responsible for planning socials and fundraisers as President of the Brandon University Music Students Association, teaches oboe as an instructor for the Brandon Conservatory and works as an oboe clinician throughout Manitoba. This past summer, she attended a two-week wind octet program at the Orford Arts Center, in the summer of 2010 she was a member of the National Youth Band of Canada and in 2010 she was awarded the Albert Johnson Memorial trophy at the Brandon Festival of the Arts.
