Research Summary

From the beginning of my time at Brandon University, my interest in biology was ignited by the learning environment provided by the university. What began as curiosity in high school blossomed into a deep-seated passion for research, thanks to the opportunities available within the university's academic landscape.

One such opportunity arose after enrolling in a Cancer Cell Biology course taught by Dr. Mousumi Majumder. Following that course, I joined her breast cancer research lab. This transformative experience not only exposed me to cutting-edge research but also instilled in me a sense of purpose and direction. It was here, within the university's research community, that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in health-related research.

Beyond the confines of traditional classroom settings, the university encouraged active participation in extracurricular activities, further enriching my academic journey. Serving as a teacher's assistant for first-year biology labs and a first-year physics lab allowed me to not only deepen my understanding of the material but also to share my knowledge with fellow students.

Central to my university experience was the opportunity to engage in biology-related activities that extended beyond the classroom. Working in the recently named Breast Cancer Cell and Molecular Research Facility, I was able to contribute to groundbreaking research aimed at combating breast cancer. This hands-on experience, coupled with access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentorship from multiple faculty members, solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in research.

Transitioning to my master's program, I have continued to be actively engaged in the university community, seizing opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills. This includes participating in national research conferences and travelling to share my research progress and learn about other research in Canada while meeting distinguished researchers in the fieldAs I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the university's support and commitment to fostering a culture of engagement and excellence.

In summary, my experience at university has been nothing short of transformative. It is here, within the university's nurturing environment, that I have found the inspiration and resources to pursue my passion for research and make meaningful contributions to the scientific community.

Brief summary of what you’ve learned:
During my time at university, I've undergone a profound transformation both academically and personally. What drew me to Brandon University was the opportunity to play USPORTS volleyball for an elite program, but other things also excited me about BU, such as the small class sizes and opportunity to connect with faculty, both I have benefited from greatly. My initial aspirations of becoming a doctor changed when I got involved with Dr. Majumder’s breast cancer research team, I’ve discovered my true passion for research in biology. Each experience has contributed to my growth and shaped my future career path. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is the importance of curiosity-driven exploration and hands-on learning. Engaging in research projects, particularly in the field of breast cancer biology, has equipped me with invaluable laboratory skills and deepened my understanding of molecular biology and computational techniques. Also, serving as a teacher's assistant for first-year biology and physics labs has honed my communication, leadership, and instructional abilities, essential qualities for any career path. Moving forward, I am confident that the knowledge and skills acquired during my time at university will serve as a solid foundation for my career in research.

Armed with a passion for discovery and a commitment to making meaningful contributions to the scientific community, I am eager to embark on the next phase of my journey, equipped with the tools and experiences gained from my university education.

List three extracurricular activities that you participate in with a brief statement of why you do it:

Assistant Coach BU Men’s Volleyball; After completing my eligibility as a player I wanted to stay involved and give back to the program that gave so much to me.

Graduate Teaching Assistant; To sharpen my skills as an instructor.

Have you been granted any awards, scholarships, or bursaries at Brandon University, and how has this impacted your education?

I have received a few scholarships and bursaries throughout my studies. This has impacted my experience in a very positive way. Having financial support is huge when it comes to stress management and focusing on education and other factors that improve the university experience. This support allowed me to focus on other extracurricular activities that support the university, instead of stressing about how I will manage to pay tuition. I don’t think I would’ve had such a positive experience, nor be as involved in university activities without the financial support I received over my years at BU.

Any other relevant information on your BU Experience (fond memories, etc.):

A few of my fondest memories include competing on the Bobcat Mens volleyball team. This brought me closer to the community here in Brandon and my time with the team ended with us winning a Conference championship and a National silver medal.

Another fond memory is travelling to Halifax, NS to attend the Canadian Cancer Research Conference. It was an amazing experience being able to meet cancer research celebrities and get to hear them speak about their research. I also had the opportunity to share my own research and that was fulfilling as I near the completion of my research here at BU and after all the work we have done it was nice to share it on a larger scale.
