Research Interests

My main area of research is human dimensions of wildlife, which is the study of how people value wildlife, how they want wildlife to be managed and how they are affected by or affect wildlife management decisions. For example, I have worked on development of whale-watching in BC and Churchill, MB, black bear-human interaction in Riding Mountain National Park, bird watching in Douglas Marsh, MB, as well as whale-watching, small-scale fisheries, protected areas, military macaws, jaguars, and crocodiles in and around Puerto Vallarta. I also do work on recreation and tourism, usually following the human dimensions approach I use above. For example, I have worked on the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on youth hockey in southwestern Manitoba and the role of rural community museums in small town Manitoba tourism.
