Contract Academic Staff, 2024/25 Fall & Winter Terms – Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is seeking qualified Contract Academic Staff (CAS) (formerly known as Sessional Instructors) to teach the following courses during the 2024-25 Regular Session in our undergraduate programs. Fall Term:

02.381 Teaching Indigenous Studies, A04

This course will assist teachers in integrating Indigenous studies into various subject areas in the school curriculum and in teaching separate courses in Indigenous  studies where this is included in the course of studies. Consideration will be given to the place of Indigenous studies for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous   students. It will include examination of the importance of relevant and accurate materials for the development of self-concept. Techniques of developing materials for or adapting existing materials to local communities will be included. History, local histories, aboriginal organization and government will be introduced. Materials will be examined for reading levels, content and suitability for various age groups.

02.455 Teaching Reading, Thinking and Study Skills, A00

This course is designed to develop skills for analyzing student reading, thinking, and study problems in the content classroom. It is also designed to provide strategies to overcome these problems. Emphasis is placed on the development of these strategies for helping students to cope with written materials and to become more efficient learners in various subject areas.

02.458 Introduction to English Language Arts Methods (EY), A02

This course is an introduction to the methods, materials, and rationale for Language Arts in the Early Years classroom. It covers the development of literacy, the influence of outside school experiences on language acquisition and development, the role of linguistics, the inter-relationship of the six areas of Language Arts, organization and development of an effective educational experience for young children and an overview of useful teaching practices and methodology ranging from direct instruction to whole language.

02.476 Social Studies Methods (EY), A01, A02

This course will examine the Social Studies curriculum from kindergarten to grade four. There will be an emphasis on learning to prepare children for social responsibilities commensurate with their age. Teacher candidates will learn to prepare and conduct activities to support the goals and objectives of the provincial social studies curriculum.

03.352 Instructional Methods (MY-SY), A01, A02

This is an introductory methods course designed to develop the skills and strategies used to teach all subjects in the Middle and Senior years. It includes the application of writing objectives, questioning strategies, and reaching closure to both lessons and units of instruction. The practical application of instructional methods to classroom situations will be an integral part of the course.

 

Winter Term:

03.250 Power, Positionality, and Privilege: Schools as Complex Spaces, A01, A02

This course is designed to offer students an opportunity to reflect on issues related to power, privilege and positionality within educational spaces. As part of the course, students will consider relationships in the classroom and the role of ethical decision-making in education.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to the Master’s degree and are invited to contact the Dean of Educaton on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credientials; please direct such inquiries to the email address below. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Ph.D. in a related field.  Applicants must qualify for a Manitoba teaching certificate, have a good understanding of the Manitoba school curriculum, and have successful teaching experience and relevant expertise in the specified area.

Salary: $6,901 per 3 credit hour course
