FAQ for New Students
What is Geology?
Geology is the study of the Earth, its environment, natural resources and evolution of life. Geoscientists study the processes that form the Earth and everything in it, including volcanos, earthquakes, oceans, mountains, minerals, energy, atmosphere and biological activity.
Is Geology important?
Absolutely! People need a great variety of materials and resources to maintain a healthy and prosperous life, and must study geoscience to understand and protect the environment. Metals, minerals, energy, water and their products are needed to sustain life. For example, there won’t be any cellphones, computers, TVs, houses or anything without metals, minerals and energy. Geological processes are studied so we can help predict and mitigate natural disasters. We live on and from the Earth, so a greater understanding leads to a better and more sustainable future.
