Sean Horner ’16
Geologist in Training at Hudbay Minerals, Snow Lake, MB
I graduated from BU with a 4-year Geology degree in 2016. Growing up on a farm near Minnedosa, the opportunity to study close to home and continue to be involved in my family’s farm operation initially drew me to BU. Prior to beginning my first semester, I planned on completing my pre-requisite courses for entry into the U of M Pharmacy program. However, during this first year I took two geology courses and quickly discovered a passion for earth science. Based on this, I decided to work towards a geology degree. The small class sizes, wide variety of courses offered, and opportunity for direct interaction with instructors in the geology department provided me with an excellent and well-rounded knowledge base, which I was able to build on while completing my M.Sc. degree at University of Calgary. Additionally, the small class sizes within the department created tight-knit student community and helped me form long-lasting friendships that I am forever grateful for.
Currently, I am employed as a Geologist in Training with Hudbay Minerals in Snow Lake, Manitoba, however my geological training has also provided me with the opportunity to work in the oil and gas industry as well as the in the academic field.
