Senior Consulting Geologist for Newmont

Hello, my name is Lynnette Osadchuk. I was born, raised, and educated in Brandon, Manitoba. Initially, I became interested in Geology because of the people. I was a lost dog in university, and I found my fit very quickly in the Geology Department at BU. The faculty and my peers brought out the best in my capabilities. I have made lifelong friendships from my time spent in the Brodie Science Center! As I learned more, my love for the subject grew. I love solving a good puzzle and you are never short of them in this field.

Currently, I am a Senior Consulting Geologist for Newmont. In this position, I provide high-level consulting in technical deposit evaluations, geologic interpretations, 3D digital modeling, drill & assay data quality assurance/quality control, and metallurgical definition sampling to ensure accurate implementation of standards and best practices for suitability for resource evaluation. My current focus of work is with our operations and projects in Ghana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Mexico. I work from home, which is in Calgary, AB.

Previously, I was the Chief of Production Geology at Newmont’s Musselwhite gold mine, Ontario, Canada. I had worked at Musselwhite for 10 years, where I started as an underground production geologist and advanced to various roles within geology. Musselwhite is a fly-in/fly-out operation located in Northwestern Ontario and I worked several schedules, rotating back and forth between Calgary, AB, and Thunder Bay, ON. Before Musselwhite, I spent 3 years in brownfields exploration with Vale in the Thompson Nickle Belt and before that, spent many a summer traversing to map and soil sample various projects.

When I graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree back in 2008, I had several full-time offers of employment. I know that these opportunities were presented due to the support the Brandon University Geology Department provided me during my education. This jump-start into my career wouldn’t have been possible without the department arranging interviews, providing networking opportunities, teaching me the skills required, and offering personal support. I am very thankful and appreciative to everyone I had the pleasure of learning from.

I believe a career in geology is dynamic, cross-functional, and rewarding. There are various fields of geological science one can explore, and the opportunities are limitless. On a personal note, I highly recommend giving a career in mining a try!
