Beginner Saxophone Camp
August 19 – 22, 2024
Brandon University School of Music
Our popular Beginner Saxophone Camp aims to ease the transition for young band students switching to saxophone while providing a positive group learning experience. The program’s curriculum has been designed with Westman Band Directors to prepare students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in their band programs.
Topics include: fundamentals in breath support, tone production, music literacy, and control over a variety of scales, articulations and dynamics. Though the camp is designed to prepare students for concert band, it also addresses jazz and beginning improvisation.
Daily Schedule
Programming runs from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily. Students should bring a bag lunch and will have access to a fridge and microwave if needed.
A celebratory final performance with all participants will take place on August 22 at 3:30 pm at the School of Music.
Recommendations for Beginners
The Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music does not supply students with instruments. Students are required to meet with their individual band directors prior to the summer program and discuss which type of saxophone they should be learning for the following school year (alto, tenor, baritone).
Whether new or used, a properly functioning saxophone is necessary for this summer program. Playing on an instrument in need of repairs makes for a frustrating and discouraging learning experience. In some cases, students may develop poor habits as a result of a poorly functioning instrument. Before purchasing a used saxophone, it is recommended to consult an expert about the condition and make of the instrument. Ask your band director about instrument rentals.
