Meet Some of our Faculty of Arts Co-op Students
Meet Kiana Rose, 4th year B.A. in Psychology with Co-op
What Co-op position have you held?
Park Patrol Officer – Provincial Parks of Manitoba
What lead you to join the Co-op program?
I wanted the opportunity to gain valuable experience relevant to my career before I graduate. Co-op gave me the chance to acquire the meaningful skills that employers are looking for. I have also witnessed how hard it can be for new grads to find a job in their field and that motivated me to pursue the hands-on experience now.
What are some highlights of your Co-op experience?
I have enjoyed meeting new people that have shared interests in the outdoors and I was also excited to learn how to use different pieces of equipment, like the bear traps and patrol boats. But I have to say my fondest memory from my Co-op experience includes rescuing three orphaned bear cubs and sending them to a facility where they can be rehabilitated and someday released back into the wild.
What are key skills you have built during your work term?
Through this opportunity, I have been able to strengthen my communication skills with both the public and my co-workers. I have also gained valuable knowledge about problem wildlife, including how to avoid issues with animals and what to do in the event that you are confronted with a problem animal.
This position has allowed me to understand some of the struggles that come with being a member of law enforcement, such as negative reactions or opinions from members of the public. I have learned how to prioritize tasks effectively and work with very little supervision. Lastly, I have strengthened my ability to problem solve, even when facing hostile situations.
Meet Emily, 4th year B.A. in Sociology in the Crime and Community stream with Co-op
What Co-op position(s) have you held?
Technical Writer – Greenstone Building Products
What is a highlight of your Co-op experience?
Cora Dupuis, the Co-op Program Coordinator, has always been super helpful and informative, she has been there for me every step of the way. I always appreciate her kindness and her willingness to help me succeed.
Working at Greenstone Building Products has lead me to learn and take part in new experiences; even when it was intimidating. The work environment has always been super positive and it is a very close-knit group of people who want to help others succeed.
What are key skills you have built during your work term?
I was hired as a technical writer at Greenstone Building Products, based on my strong academic writing. However, I quickly realized there is a notable difference between technical and academic writing. Fortunately, Greenstone invested in courses to help me grow my writing skills for tech projects, blog writing, and online social material. Now, I feel confident in my writing skills as a technical writer.
I can also say that I have expanded my interpersonal skills. Working with multiple co-workers from various departments and with a vast range of backgrounds has really helped me evolve and expand my interpersonal skills.
