Mechanic Apprentice - Level 1
The work of an apprentice mechanic is to learn overhauls, maintenance, and repair of automobiles, buses, and light and heavy construction equipment in combination with completing the formal schooling requirement.
The Apprentice will learn to diagnose and repair assigned equipment under the supervision of the Fleet Services Chargehand and assistance of journeyman mechanics, developing independent judgement within the limits of their apprentice skills. Assignments are received orally or in writing, generally setting forth a complaint about the operating conditions of the piece of equipment. Work is monitored and assessed on an ongoing basis by the Fleet Services Chargehand and/or their designate.
This position is for the term of the apprenticeship program only. The apprentice mechanic is expected to make scheduled progress through the program levels.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION
- Grade 12, G.E.D., or Mature High School Diploma;
- Attend and successfully complete all four levels (or remaining levels) of Journeyman Certification in Truck and Transport Mechanic Trade or equivalent as issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour and any additional training and upgrading pursuant to the apprentice mechanic program;
- Obtain and maintain a valid and subsisting Class 3 with Air Endorsement Province of Manitoba driver’s licence within three (3) months of appointment.

Rate of Pay:
$17.20 - $27.52 per hour – 2022 rates
Position Conditions: This position’s hours of work will vary and include evenings and weekends. This will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69.
