We are seeking qualified individuals to train for a career as a Natural Gas Maintenance Person.

This 4-year apprenticeship program includes on-the-job training and 10 weeks of competency-based classroom training that prepares you for a career as a Natural Gas Maintenance person. Natural Gas Maintenance Persons maintain, repair, abandon, modify, and inspect the natural gas distribution and transmission system, including pipelines, meter installations, pressure control installations, and related facilities.

As a Natural Gas Maintenance Trainee, you will:

  • Be required to obtain a Utility Gas Fitter's Licence by completing the Manitoba Utility Gas Fitter's Licence exam.
  • Assist in the installation, construction, repair, maintenance, and abandonment of natural gas pipelines and related facilities by performing specific tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills required to operate hand, power, and hydraulic tools, instruments, squeezing equipment, power excavation equipment (e.g., backhoe, trenchers etc.), and pipeline stopping and tapping equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the installation, operation, and maintenance of natural gas measurement, pressure control, and energy isolation devices.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of cathodic protection systems.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of combustion, properties, and migration of natural gas by applying safety measures while working with and around natural gas.
  • Learn and demonstrate safe relighting procedures for natural gas appliances.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner, performing minor checks and maintaining vehicles and equipment in good order.
  • Work in a variety of settings in all weather conditions and working conditions both inside and outside, such as domestic dwellings, commercial buildings, public property, streets, open fields, and in excavations.

As part of your training, you will be required to obtain a Utility Gas Fitter's Licence by completing the Manitoba Department of Labour Utility Gas Fitter's Licence exam. Natural Gas Maintenance Persons need to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge to keep pace with the ongoing development of new technology in the Natural Gas industry.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence and be capable of obtaining a Class 3 with air endorsement.
  • Reside within the Winnipeg headquarters zone or within 20 minutes driving distance from your assembly point. The Winnipeg headquarters zone is defined as the City of Winnipeg and 5 kms outside of the perimeter.
  • Enjoy physically demanding work in all types of weather.
  • Capable of working at heights on ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, rooftops, and mechanical lifts.
  • Be prepared to work with higher-pressure natural gas and mechanical and electrical systems while adhering to established safety procedures.
  • Be prepared to work in confined spaces, trenches, and excavations with hazardous products while conforming to established safety procedures.
  • Be prepared to periodically participate in a standby rotation.
  • Be prepared to interact with customers as required.
  • Previous experience in a trade requiring a mechanical aptitude would be considered an asset.

Salary Range

Natural Gas Maintenance Trainee $19.75-$35.91 Hourly, $37,848.98-$68,816.02 Annually.

Natural Gas Maintenance Person $35.91-$40.65 Hourly, $68,816.02-$77,887.42 Annually.
