Lake Winnipeg Basin Program – Student Work Experience

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) regularly hires students through Government of Canada student employment programs such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Post-secondary Co-operative Education/Internship Program (Co-op/Internship). Through the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program, ECCC will hire a student to support freshwater related activities in support of ECCC’s mandate.

Who can apply: Canadian citizens. Candidates must also be enrolled (or willing to enrol) in an approved student-work experience program. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens who are members of the following Employment Equity group: Aboriginal persons. Note: Prior to appointment, hired candidates who self-declare as Aboriginal will have to complete and sign an Affirmation of Aboriginal Affiliation Form (AAAF).

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba, anticipation of three days in the office.

Position Start Date: September 2, 2024

Duration of Employment: Four-month term

Hours of Work: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (flexible hours may be considered)

Available Position: Policy, Planning and Support Student
This position will support ECCC’s Lake Winnipeg Basin Program

Duties and Responsibilities:
• The candidate will provide policy, planning and program administration support
for the delivery of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program as well as related freshwater
activities.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
o Analyzing, reviewing, summarizing and reporting on regional water
issues
o Gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information from multiple
sources to inform program implementation
o Supporting engagement with Indigenous partners in the work of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program
o Creating infographics and/or story maps to showcase program
accomplishments

Essential Qualifications and Requirements
The successful candidates will demonstrate aptitude in the following areas:
• Knowledge of the role of Environment and Climate Change Canada related to
freshwater water issues.
• Strong technical communication skills, ability to analyze and synthesize data.
• Experience with Microsoft-based programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and
PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of water quality science and environmental issues.
• Communicate effectively (orally and in writing).

Personal Suitability
• Initiative, judgement, reliability and effective interpersonal skills.

Conditions of Employment
• Candidates will be required to pass all relevant security clearances for the
position to be staffed.

Language Proficiency: English essential.
